D157 -- Avril complicates things
I woke Thomas up, and then we both woke Caitlin up to say goodbye. Colter was a real trooper to drive us 45 minutes to the airport at 5 a.m. even though he'd stayed up all night. We had a great time with them – it's so cool to be able to visit family in places like Taiwan and Cyprus!
We flew to Izmir, Turkey, where we had a two hour layover. We were supremely annoyed when we found that there was no transit area: we had to pay $20 US per person just to enter the country even though we wouldn't be leaving the airport. Plus, we got stamps in our passports, so now I only have one space left! Next, we ate at quite possibly the most expensive Burger King in the world. It came out to US$27 for two hamburgers, two drinks and one order of fries. And it wasn't even good!! Poor Thomas was so sick he barely touched his hamburger. Normally I would not be bothered by such inconveniences: they're all just a part of traveling. But today I just wasn't in the mood. Probably because I was so tired. Right after we boarded our plane to Frankfurt the nice German man sitting next to Thomas got a pillow from the flight attendant for him because he could tell Thomas felt terrible. What made the flight even more horrible for him (and me) was the bad music being piped in at all times except for during the movie. It was a loop of just five or so songs. I heard Avril Lavigne's “Complicated” at least four times – make it stop!
There were lots of World Cup fans in the airport when we landed. Too bad we couldn't score tickets :( We got a rental car and drove to a town called Wurzburg. It was a really cute town with a river running through it, but Thomas was in no condition to take in the sights so we just holed up in our wi-fi outfitted hotel room and ordered room service. Just what the doctor ordered.
