D164 -- Like crossing the border!
Sadly, we left Venice this morning. It was such a beautiful place to visit. We posted some of our favorite pictures that didn't make it on the blog at our smugmug site.
From Venice we took a train to the north of Italy, stopping in a town that sits at the base of the Dolomites. This portion of Italy was actually part of Germany up until the end of World War I, and as result you are more likely to hear German spoken than Italian. The town actually has two names, one for the Italian speakers (Bolzano) and one for the German speakers (Bozen). It definitely looks more German than Italian, and at the restaurant where we ate lunch the menu was in German with Italian translations.
I had a splitting headache, so when we finally checked into our hotel in the afternoon we decided to just take it easy for the rest of the day. I picked up some groceries from a supermarket and we ate dinner in our room. We watched The Italian Job, mostly because part of it takes place in Venice. We were excited to see that a lot of the Venice scenes were filmed pretty close to our hotel. Cool.
