D165 -- Ötzi the iceman
We split up for the day… we are trying to wean ourselves off of one another in preparation for our return to the States. Actually, we just wanted to do different things. Thomas took a cable car further up into the mountains so he could go hiking, while I headed off for the archaeological museum, which is home to the famous ice man discovered in 1991 by some German hikers. Even more amazing than his well-preserved, 5,000 year-old body were all the clothing and items found with him. A jacket, shoes, leg covers, loin cloth, hat, ax, bow and arrows, etc. It was amazing to see how our ancestors lived. Humans were very resourceful back then. I learned that homo sapiens have been around for 500,000 years, and human history may have begun up to 2 million years ago. I was impressed by the history in Rome, but really the last 2000 years are jut a drop in the bucket!
The other cool thing about the museum – I got to see a gorgeous view of the mountains from their fourth floor windows, where...
Thomas had a great day. He walked to a point about 7,000 feet above sea level. He was really impressed with the system of trails, as they are very well marked and maintained. He said the area reminded him of that movie, Heidi, and that he kept having to remind himself that he was in Italy.
